Losing Out
Just when Malaysian Indians are beating all odds to create a better future for themselves in this country, the community has been given a rude awakening by the figures released by the Immigration Department and the demographic statistics unit of the Statistics Department on the population count based on racial breakdown as of 30th June 2007. The Indians have now seemed to have been outnumbered by foreign workers and illegal immigrants combined! Where is the Indian community heading to? Studies show that low fertility rate and late marriages among Indian women have led to the drop in population. Now, foreign workers and non citizens constitute 1.91million of the nation’s population while the Indians are at a sorry 1.88million. Forecasts show that the outsiders will further grow up to 2.05million in 2009, whereas the Indian community would stand at only 1.94 million. This issue has to be pondered by every Indian in this country and proper steps from all parties concerned have to be taken to prevent the from community getting lost in its homeland. |
