EWRF Merdeka Charity Golf Tournament 2008

A charitable event meant to support the many activities aimed at improving the lives and easing the sufferings of our Indian community living in the estates as well as to give their children a chance at survival and a future.

What are we talking about? The deplorable sights and stories that make you want to cry “Foul!” and at the same time donate everything you have to these forgotten people… Children wearing hand-me-downs, living in dilapidated squatter structures that are not fit to be called a house but is nevertheless home to these misbegotten community. Food is scarce to come by and poverty is nothing new to them. Financial instability is the least of their problems when the biggest challenge to these young minds are their parents who come home drunk, or are afflicted with critical illness such as brain tumour and cancer, or are mentally unsound, in which case, the burden to support the family falls on the young shoulders of these underprivileged kids.

To give these children hope and to show them a little light at the end of their tunnel, EWRF has continuously worked towards easing their plight. It is not an easy task, as they need to assiduously look for resources and funds to support their cause. It is even more challenging in today’s world as there are many who would take advantage of noble causes for self-gain. Determinedly, EWRF has time-and-time again proved that they are committed towards the well being of the Indian community, having organized numerous activities and events to for the benefit of our community. One such fund-raising event is the EWRF Merdeka Charity Golf Tournament 2008.

The Charity Golf Tournament was held on 24 August 2008 at the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club. This tournament is an annual event held to support the EWRF noble causes and youth empowerment projects among other charitable events. Open to all golf enthusiasts, the tournament convened with the registration session at about 11 am, followed by a light lunch break at the Golfers Terrace. The golfers teed off at 12 noon. After an exciting afternoon at the golf range, the tournament came to an end at about 5pm.

The golfers reconvened at about 7.30pm for the official closing ceremony and prize giving session. The ceremony began with a welcome address by EWRF Patron, Dato Dr A. Ratnanesan, followed by a speech from the Organizing Committee Chairman, A. Yogeswaran. Dinner and entertainment for the night started at 8pm. The prize presentation was held at 8.45pm. Soon after that, the charity golf event wrapped up.

Proceeds from the charity event will be channelled to various projects and activities that are aimed at helping the underprivileged and providing resources for students in their quest for self-empowerment and improvement. For over thirty year, EWRF has toiled dedicatedly in its aim to do good for our community. Among the many events that EWRF has organized include Student Empowerment Programme in Kem Bumi Jati Shah Alam, Motivation Camps for Ampang RENEW students, Plus 8 Programme in Kajang, Fund-raising for Project Hope, C3G Workshops, Launching of EWRF Junior Club, Cultural Programmes and many others.

ERWF will continue its pursuit to help the children in our community to forge ahead with the resolute determination to succeed and leaving behind that negative stigmatization of our community for all times. It is time for us to charge forward and become a progressive-thinking community!
