It’s Show Time
Total Immersion Camp (TIC) is underway. EWRF means business when it comes to making TIC a success. To ensure that things are in order, a team of officials from the headquarters, led by Executive Director Ms Subita Nair, visited one of the centres located at SJK T Mentakab, Mentakab on the 23rd of November 2007.
“I’m quite impressed with the way the students have been behaving so far. I can see that the wardens and teachers in charge of this centre are doing an excellent job. Bravo”, said a content Subita. After touring the dorms and other facilities, Subita took some time to have a quick chat with the 70 students. She stated to the students that despite the fact exams are important to a student’s life, exams are not everything. She reminded them to be persistent and focused in getting across hurdles in life, adding that good students must help the weaker ones in a “pass it forward” spirit.
EWRF officials will be visiting the other TIC centres and the next stop will be Johor Bahru (26th November 2007) and this will be followed by Mak Mandin (29th & 30th November 2007).
Update on Johor Bahru TIC Centre Visit
Despite the heavy downpour and thickening haze when heading towards Johor, my 3 ½ hour drive to Johor Bahru on Monday, 26th November 2007 was well worth my time.
Meeting me at SJK (T) Ladang Ulu Tiram, Johor Bahru was Mr Chandran our JB TIC Coordinator who has done a fantastic job in bringing in 91 participants for this event. I walked around the premises, met his charming wife who has graciously agreed to stay there for 21 days leaving her two children at home under the care of a nanny.
I managed to address all the 91 students and again stressed the importance of helping one another to achieve our goals. I made it a point to tell them that life is full of ups and downs and that facing challenges is always the best option and that suicide should never be in the picture.
I also had a very fruitful meeting with Mr Chandran. I must thank all the wardens, facilitators and volunteers for their untiring effort.

Update on Mak Mandin TIC Centre Visit
Unlike the downpour during my journey south to the TIC centre in Ulu Tiram, the weather was humid throughout the 5 hours drive north, to Butterworth.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Mr Muniandy, Assistant Coodinator of the TIC centre who was a kind gentleman. He immediately took us to SJK T Mak Mandin, where the 40 participants of the camp were placed. I took the opportunity to speak to a few of them and here are some of their thoughts:
G Balakrishnan – “I enjoyed the trips that were organized for us. Very
educational”
Thamaraiselvi – “The group activities are very interesting”
Punithan Sivasamy – “The teachers are teaching very well”
Praseetha Kaur – “The activities and talks at night are fun”

After meeting the students, I had a chance to chit chat with the wardens, facilitators and volunteers. A while later, Mr Vellayutham, the Chief Coodinator, joined in our light conversation.
I am very glad that all the TIC centres have given us positive feedback and that the centres were happy with the programme.
We left Penang at 11am the next day. I felt that the visit was well worth the journey as I was able to meet the children to convey some good advice regarding the importance of education, cooperation and good values.
Well done to Mr Vellayutham and his team. We thank you for your hospitality.
