My Daily Routine

dDevindran Kumarasamy, a form four student from SMK Seksyen 24, Shah Alam who attended Career Guidance and Counselling Workshop held by EWRF in the school on 12 April 2007 tells Manikam Krishnan, EWRF Manager what he does daily..

There are five children in my family. My father works as a lorry driver and my mother is a home maker. I received my primary education at a National School in Shah Alam. All my brothers and sisters attended Tamil schools because now my father has stronger confidence in Tamil school.  This is because of the tremendous improvement among Tamil school students in the UPSR examination. I obtained average results in the UPSR and PMR whereas my two younger brothers scored  6As in UPSR. But it does not bother me much because I am determined to get better results in SPM next year.

dDuring the school hours, I concentrate on what the teachers are saying in the classroom but I admit that I do chit chat with my classmates sometimes. I have both Malay and Indian friends.

After school hours, I hang around with my Indian friends for at least 20 minutes daily in front of the school before going back home. Normally we talk about friends, girls and movies. Sometimes I see friends fighting among themselves for petty reasons. Once I saw a fight among some form four and form five students. The reason was because the form four students never gave due respect to the form five students. The form  five students claimed that the form four students used harsh words on them.

Once I am home from school,  I have a shower first before having my lunch. Then I spend some time with my mother updating her on my whole day schedule. After that I have a nap and get up at 5.30pm. In the evenings I try to spend sometime with my brothers and go to the nearby field to play football. Around 6.30pm I take my bath. Then we will all be in the hall from 7pm to 9pm where we study. No TV or Radio is on during the time. My mother teaches my younger sisters during that time.

We have our dinner at 9pm. Then we watch some Tamil programmes together. Our favourite programmes are some Tamil serials such as Selvi, Arasi, Kalki and Roja. I usually go to bed around at 10pm while my mother waits for my father who only comes back home after work late in the night.

On Saturday and Sunday I usually get up from the bed at 10am. If I do not have any activities at the school, I prefer staying at home and helping my mother go to shop to buy household things. I wash my school shoes and spend most of my time watching TV on Saturday and Sunday. Most Sunday nights we normally go out for dinner.

As the eldest son in the family I want to be a role model to my brothers and sisters. I try not to get involved in any undesirable activities and closely choose my friends.  I want to study hard so that I can become a policeman in the future. I thank EWRF for holding Career Guidance and Counseling Workshop at my school. It helped me a lot to identify my character and career path.
