Project READ

Project READ, well the name itself would give us an insight as to what EWRF has in mind – our objective is to inculcate reading habit among Tamil school students.  Surveys have shown that most Malaysians hardly complete a book in their lifespan.  So in order to change that perception, EWRF has come up with a simple Project called READ.  It will be conducted once a week for 45 minutes at five selected Tamil schools. The children are ranging from 10-12 years old have been asked to read books in English which was purchased by EWRF. Reading will definitely enhance their communication and confidence skills in English. This project fully sponsored by Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Berhad was launched at five Tamil schools - SJK(T) Kajang, SJK(T) Rinching, SJK(T) Bangi, SJK(T) Serdang and SJK(T) Seaport, Sg Way.

EWRF had a soft launch of this project at SJK(T) Seaport on 22 March 2007. Ms Subita Nair, Executive Director of EWRF urged the students to consistently read more books in English as one of the effective ways to improve English.  EWRF Manager Mr Manikam Krishnan briefed the teachers and students on the implementation and monitoring of the Project.

Project Read will be carried out from 22 March 2007 till September 2007 as a pilot project. Students need to note the book title, author’s name, vocabulary and what they learnt in a log book every week until the project is completed. Students will be supervised and guided by their teachers.  EWRF officials will visit the schools on an impromptu basis to ensure the project is carried out as required.

dHere’s what Little Yesotha said…she is 12 years old and could not read and write…..

“My father passed away one year ago. My mother is a factory worker. There are 8 children in my family. Three are working and others are studying. I am very weak in English. I want to improve my level of English through this program”, said M. Yesotha of SJK(T) Bangi during the first day of the program.  Like her there are many other children who are unable to read even at the age of 12 so EWRF is committed to our part to upgrade the level of English standard for these children at these selected Tamil schools. We hope that Project Read will make a difference in their life.
